PhD Candidate in Planning and Architecture – Urban planning for uncertainty

The Department of Planning and Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and Design has an available PhD position for 3 years in one of the department’s strategic areas on urban uncertainty.

The topic is centered around a presumption that social, environmental, economic and political instabilities have become central concerns for urban governance and planning, which impede the ability of professionals and decision-makers to make projections and predictions that are capable of effectively guiding future urban development. More specifically, cities around the world need to cope with the increasing frequency of climate change impacts, financial instabilities, armed conflicts and forced migration. The growing income inequalities and chronic poverty magnify these uncertainties, making cities socially, environmentally and economically more vulnerable and fragile. The need to address urban uncertainties with a particular focus on housing has been recognized at the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III in 2016.
